Enjoy planning your next holiday!

  Editor's Choice

Tilba Cottage, Pretty Beach, NSW

Lives
are so busy these days that for many of us, long holidays are a thing
of the past.  We seem to be taking shorter but more frequent breaks and
one of the most important points in deciding where to stay is the
distance between home and the property.  Count yourself lucky if you
live in Sydney, as Tilba Cottage, nestled in the serene bush and
national parks of the central coast, is only 90 minutes from Sydney –
but miles away from the everyday.

Telstra Business Awards
We
had a great night at the awards last month and although we didn't win
our category, we know what an honour it is to just be a finalist. There
are over 4500 applicants and only 16 finalists and we were the only
tourism business to be a finalist
in any category - which in itself says we must be doing something
right! Our category "Small Business" is the most competitive and the
winner of our category (eWay) was the overall winner as well, and we
congratulate
them on their success.
One of the benefits of entering awards like these is they help us to
focus on areas where we can provide and offer even better service to
travellers and accommodation operators.

Domestic Tourism Audit winner
Deciding the winner was a tough job!
We received so many great travel tips that we can't possibly mention
them all here, but the most common tip was to pack lightly and roll
your clothes to maximise space
and minimise creases. Another important tip was to enjoy the journey -
not just the destination and take regular breaks when driving. Confirm
all bookings and take a a copy of any travel paperwork. An honourable
mention goes to Mary Kelly for her tip:" Best travel tip is the
TakeABreak Holiday Inspirations email because it reminds me to do
something about my next holiday!" Thanks Mary! However
the winner of the $300 voucher is Meg Rayment for this tip: "Travel
just outside peak holiday times for the best value - most places are
open and in busy mode. Alternatively, travel completely out of season
for a different holiday experience (eg beach in winter, alps in
summer)."

TakeABreak Awards state finalists
Our 2008 Awards are well underway, and we are proud to announce the state winners across all the categories. Click here for a complete list of state winners and their categories. We will be announcing the national winners next month.

Once again our congratulations to all finalists and winners and thank
you to all the guests who have helped us discover the 'best of the
best'.

Kidspot 'Best of Awards'
Here
is your chance to vote for your choice of best website, toys, books,
baby products and more. And just by casting your vote, you could win
one of the weekly prizes of $50. Just
click here and vote at Kidspot
and remember that the more creative and original your entry, the more
chance you have of winning.  There will be 6 winners in each category,
so get voting now!

Environmental Care

More 'green' tips
Buying
your lunch is arguably more water and energy efficient than making it
yourself, but a home-packed lunch is far cheaper and produces less
waste than
fast food. Food courts and other public places often fail to provide
recycling bins, so a lot of waste ends up in landfill. You can save by
making your lunch at home and re-using takeaway containers and bread
wrappers rather than plastic film or aluminium foil.

Each
year we throw away more than 3.4 million tonnes of packaging - equal to
165kg for every man, woman and child in Australia - and less than half
of it
is recycled. If you can't find a recycling bin, take your rubbish with
you. All plastics marked 1 to 7 are theoretically recyclable, although
some councils recover only 1, 2 and 3. Check with your local council
and avoid sending packaging to landfill. Buy in bulk when you can and
favour fresh produce from local markets.

Choose
products that are produced locally. Transporting products from around
the world contributes to air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.
Buying
locally made products is a great way to reduce adverse environmental
impacts, while supporting local economies.

That
comforting little light on your TV, DVD player or computer consumes
enough electricity to add about $100 to your power bill every year,
creating up to 85kg of greenhouse gases. Standby mode, which usually
serves no purpose apart from running a clock, accounts for about 10% of
the average household's power consumption - and bill. Switch appliances
off at the wall.

With thanks to the Manly Environment Centre and the Manly Daily for these tips.

Holiday Hints

Outdoor safety

The weather is warming up and we are all going to spend more
time outdoors - so now is a good time to remember some basic safety
tips:

* Check local weather conditions   (www.bom.gov.au, local newspapers) if you are planning to   be out and about.
*
The sun is strong in Australia — drink plenty of water regularly and
protect your skin  from burning. Seek shade when outside, cover up with
clothing and wear a sun protective hat, sunglasses and SPF 30+
sunscreen.
* Before you light a campfire, check that fires are not banned in the area.
* Campfires should be extinguished by using water — not sand or dirt.
*
Use accredited Visitor Information Centres (yellow and blue 'i' signs)
for local and   regional information, including local safety issues
(such as stinging jellyfish or   crocodiles, unique road conditions,
beach safety).

Holiday Hints

Thinking family-friendly
for your holidays? What makes a holiday family-friendly? Here are some
ideas about things you should ask in advance - to help you have the
best holiday you can:

* Does the property have childrens games/videos etc, if so for what age groups?
* Is there a games room suitable for children? (what age groups)
* Are there local activities, or activities that are suitable for children?
* Does the property have a playground, or is there
one nearby?
* Is there a fenced/safe backyard for children?
* Is there have a kids club or can you assist in arranging babysitting?
* Does the property have a portacot (if more than one how many)?
* Do they provide a high chair?
* Do they have childrens plastic cups, plates, knives, forks etc?

Obviously,
your needs will depend on the age of the children in your care, so
think laterally. For the best holiday you can have, ask before you
book.

What
to say about a property where the name says it all?  Perhaps the best
place to start is to show why the name of this gorgeous house is so
apt.  The Coffs coast is one of nature’s gifts, with superb beaches

cruise past and the rainforest hinterland is only a short trip away.

And
in the middle of all this is Sea Magic, a five-bedroom home in a
residential area, with sloping lawns that run down to safe and secluded

Arafura Blue, Darwin NT

Not just for the dry season...

When we think of Darwin, we usually think of going in the dry
season.  This certainly allows us to enjoy activities like the Darwin
Cup in July and the renowned festival, which runs each year in August.
It also means that most of the spectacular national parks are open.
The downside is that the city is more crowded, accommodation is
difficult to come by and you will have missed the experience of the wet!

Don’t
let the wet season put you off… it is Darwin’s best-kept secret and a
great antidote to the hot, dry summers and water restrictions of the
southern states.
